Our role as educators is important. Our students must be a permanent variable in creating a better world in the future, so we must empower them with knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes. We understand the importance of Escuela Moderna, a bilingual school in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Our students take Cambridge Igcse exams and learn a lot about sustainable development through topics such as environmental stewardship and global perspectives on Cambridge programs.

We all know how bad plastic is for the environment, health, and wildlife. Plastic is not biodegradable. This means that plastic does not decompose naturally and does not remain in the environment for hundreds of years. Plastic that is not used properly becomes waste. Contaminating the land, rivers, lakes, and oceans, plastic pollution has become a global environmental crisis. This poses a threat to marine ecosystems, wildlife, and human health.

As one of the professors of environmental management, one of my goals is to fight plastic pollution. We call it “Botella de amor” (bottle of love), an NGO that fills plastic bottles with virgin or non-recycled plastic. And turn them into cheap insulating building materials. And they use the walls as gardens for small building projects. I started this project almost four years ago to keep plastic out of rivers, landfills, and oceans.

Since then we have been doing it every year with different groups of students. And the motivation increased. It was a great opportunity to help solve the problem. And their families joined the project by bringing whole bottles to school.

How Can Schools Be Part of the Solution

• Incorporate sustainability into your curriculum: global issues such as climate change and water pollution can be integrated into your curriculum and materials. This can be done in subjects such as science, social studies, geography, economics, and ethics.
• Encourage critical thinking and problem-solving activities: it involves finding facts, researching, and discussing different viewpoints. And offers innovative solutions to sustainability problems.
• Promote active learning and participation: provide opportunities for students to participate in experiential learning activities such as field trips, simulations, group projects, and community service projects. This allows them to integrate theory and practice and gain a deeper understanding of sustainability concepts and their practical applications.
• Encourage reflection and discussion: create a safe and inclusive learning environment where students can freely share their ideas, questions, and concerns about sustainability. Facilitate classroom discussions, debates, and reflective activities to develop critical thinking. Active listening and respectful conversations about sustainability issues.
• Exemplary sustainable practices: in your classroom, exemplify sustainable practices such as reducing waste and conserving energy and water. And encourage recycling to help students develop personal responsibility and sustainable practices.
• Partner with a local organization: bring a guest speaker or host a sustainability workshop at your school. It can provide students with a realistic perspective and experience on sustainable development.
• Use technological and multimedia tools: videos, and interactive websites. In addition, educational games can be used to increase students’ awareness of sustainable development and engage them in interactive learning experiences.
