Liver Blood Tests

Liver Blood Tests Levels – Normal, Low, and High Levels Results

Liver blood tests are located in the upper right part of the abdominal cavity, just below the rib cage. The liver has many functions that are vital for life.

In short, some of the important functions of the human liver are:

  • Blood detoxification
  • Production of important coagulation factors, albumin, and many other important proteins
  • Metabolism (processing) of drugs and nutrients
  • Processing of waste products of hemoglobin and other cells
  • Storage of vitamins, fats, cholesterol, and bile
  • Glucose production (Gluconeogenesis or glucose synthesis/release during starvation)

Aminotransferase enzymes catalyze chemical reactions in which an amino group from an amino acid (amino acids are the building blocks of proteins) is transferred from a donor molecule to an acceptor molecule, hence the name “Aminotransferases“. Medical terms can sometimes be confusing, as with these enzymes because they have interchangeable names that commonly appear in both medical and non-medical articles. For example:

  • Another Name for Aminotransferase Is Transaminase.
  • The Enzyme Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) Is Also Known as Serum Glutaminase Oxaloacetate (SGOT).
  • Alanine Aminotransferase (Alt) Is Also Known as Serum Pyruvate Glutaminase (SGPT).

Liver Blood Tests and Symptoms of Liver Disease:

Symptoms of Liver Disease

The liver has multiple functions. It produces many chemicals that the body needs for its normal functioning, breaks down and detoxifies substances in the body, and also acts as a storage unit.

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin)
  • Burnout
  • Weakness
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Excessive bruising or bleeding
  • Leg swelling

What Are Normal Liver Function Tests?

Normal Liver Function Tests

Then liver blood tests are among the most common blood tests. Then the first step in detecting liver damage is a simple blood test to determine then the level of certain liver enzymes (proteins) in the blood. Enzymes help speed up (catalyze) daily and then the vital chemical reactions in the body.

Among then the most sensitive and widely used liver enzymes are the aminotransferases. They contain aspartate aminotransferase (AST or SGOT) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT or SGPT). Apart from AST and ALT, alkaline phosphatase, 5′ nucleotides, and then the γ-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) are some of then the other enzymes present in the liver. This article mainly focuses on then the most common liver enzymes, AST and ALT.
